DublinTown Ambassadors welcome cruise ships passengers to Dublin!

  • Fri 24 July, 2015

On Thursday 23rd July 2015, 10,000 additional visitors arrived into Dublin on four cruise ships (The Magellan, Horizon, Celebrity Silhouette and Royal Princess) which docked in Dublin Port.

Our DublinTown Ambassadors have been granted privileged clearance by the Dublin Port Authority to gain access onto the ships to welcome the visitors to Dublin and to provide them with information about the city.

Research conducted by Fáilte Ireland suggests that visitors from the cruise ships spend an average of €100 during their stop-over in Dublin. However feedback from DublinTown members suggest that the actual average spend is higher, meaning that a minimum of €1,000,000 was generated for business and trade in the city on the day.

2015 is proving to be a very busy year in terms of the number of visitors arriving into Dublin City on cruise ships. Our DublinTown ambassadors are always there to meet them before they disembark the ships. The majority of the passengers are in their 50’s and know exactly what they want out of their time in Dublin City. During their conversations with the passengers of the cruise ships our DublinTown Ambassadors provided information about the city, directions to the main tourist attractions as well as recommendations on where to visit, eat, drink and shop during their time in Dublin. The most frequent questions asked on the day were for recommendations for good places to enjoy traditional Irish food and drink offerings as well as where to purchase items of Irish craft and design.

In 2014 our ambassadors welcomed 150,000 visitors from 88 cruise ships. 2015 is proving just as busy. So far over 50 ships have docked in Dublin Port, carrying over 60,000 passengers. The good news for Dublin is that many of the passengers say that their stop-over in Dublin was one of the highlights of their holiday and they would be very interested in making a return visit for a longer period of time.
