DublinTown supports Garda Bike Week initiative

  • Wed 17 June, 2015

National Bike Week, an initiative of the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport runs from 13-21st June 2015. As part of our ongoing close working relationship with An Garda Síochána DublinTown is proud to support the Gardaí as they seek to highlight the increase in bike related crime in the city.

Over the past ten years the level of bike theft has increased by 227%, with approximately one in three reported bike thefts taking place in Dublin City Centre. The average value of the bikes stolen is approximately €500.

Twice as many bikes are stolen during the summer months, a trend which peaks in July, August and September. To highlight this issue and to encourage greater bike safety awareness among cyclists An Garda Síochána have put a series of specific operations in place to target bike thieves. One such operation involves the placement of a number of ‘Bait’ bikes in locations around the city that experience high levels of bike theft.

DublinTown has supported An Garda Síochána through the placement of 8 info bikes around Dublin City Centre. These bikes are brightly painted and display an infographic to remind and encourage cyclists to lock their bikes properly. The bikes are fixed in place using effective locking systems which Cycleways in Parnell Street supplied to DublinTown.

An Garda Síochána  have produced a poster to emphasise the key messages of their bike safety campaign: Bicycle theft prevention poster
