Government drafting law on sale of prescription drugs

  • Mon 28 May, 2012

As many of you may have seen in today’s Irish Times, new legislation prohibiting street dealing of prescription drugs will be enacted by the Government. As we outlined at our recent Area Members meetings, we have  lobbied persistently for this and in March of this year we drafted appropriate ammendments to existing legislation which would allow the Gardai to initiate prosecutions against those engaged in the street dealing of what are legal medicines.

We are pleased to see that Ministers Shatter, Reilly and Shortall have agreed with us and will now make the necessary changes. We would like to thank all the business who worked with us to lobby politicians to introduce this important amendment. We would also like to extend our appreciation to Lord Mayor Andrew Montague for recognising the importance of this issue and supporting us with representations to the relevant Ministers.  We have expressed our views that the enactment of this legislation must be immediate and will continue to push for this on your behalf.
