Switching On Of DublinTown Christmas Lights

  • Wed 13 November, 2019

Over 30 DublinTown streets are now illuminated as the Christmas lights turn on and officially mark the beginning of the festive season in the capital.

There’s nowhere quite like the city centre of Dublin at Christmas. Since 2008, DublinTown takes on the task of decorating the city in stunning Christmas lights for the busiest shopping and socialising season of the year. In that time DublinTown has also grown the number of street with Christmas lights, starting with just 3 streets to now over 30 streets. Their presence gives a sense of joy in the area and adds to the buzz of the city every November and December.

The DublinTown Christmas lights consist of over 1 million low energy LED light bulbs (47,350 individual light bulbs on Grafton street alone) and approximately 5km of lights in total. The lights are now a feature attraction for the public who can be seen each evening taking pictures and selfies under the lights.

Richard Guiney CEO of DublinTown said:

“The DublinTown Christmas lights is by far the biggest task that we undertake for our business members and people of Dublin. We start putting up the Christmas lights across the city from October. It takes 30 people working through the night, over 4 weeks and over 200 hours to completely erect all the lights. Each and every single bulb and fixture is tested by DublinTown’s lighting teams in advance. The lights will be illuminated for over 1,000 hours from November to early January and we invite everyone to go to town and make new Christmas memories under the magic of the DublinTown Christmas lights.”
