DublinTown Host NEIC Transition Year Work Experience Programme

  • Thu 23 January, 2020

The North East Inner City (NEIC) Initiative is a social regeneration initiative endorsed by Government involving local communities in the NEIC, businesses and statutory agencies creating opportunities to bring about lasting, positive change in the area.

DublinTown will be hosting students from the programme during 2020. The feedback from last years’ participants was overwhelmingly positive and we ask all businesses and civil and public service organisations within the district  to consider hosting a local Dublin 1 student on a work experience placement.

The 2019/2020 NEIC Work Experience initiative was a huge success. To date NEIC have sourced 377 career orientated work experience placements across 68 public, civil service and private sector organisations for TY & LCA students in 6 local DEIS schools (Larkin, O’Connell’s, Mount Carmel, St Joseph’s, Marino College & Rosmini). They have 92 more students looking for placements in March and would love to speak with interested employers.

Work experience has the potential to make a real difference in the lives of young people. Often, work placements can reflect and reproduce patterns of inequality with working class students getting working class placements and middle class pupils experiencing the benefits of ‘professional placements’.

The NEIC work experience placement programme is a conscious effort to buck this trend and is one strand in a coordinated effort to open doors, raise awareness and aspirations and ultimately to provide students in Dublin 1 schools with access to and insight into professions and career paths outside their existing network.

Student Feedback:

“This experience was great, I got to experience a little bit of everything and learn about all the different jobs and I now have the best CV. I didn’t know much about IT Recruitment before and it’s definitely a job I will consider for the future.”

Business feedback:

“Verve were delighted to be part of the NEIC programme and host 5 Transition Year students for the week. The students were both creative and eager and participated in onsite and offsite projects. We enjoyed working with them and to see them grow in confidence,  in such a short space of time, was a rewarding experience for the students’ and Verve.”

This initiative has proven itself to be an impactful and effective way to support the community in a highly meaningful way.
