DublinTown response to Capel Street proposals
- Fri 21 May, 2021
DublinTown believes that increased pedestrianisation is of benefit to city centres, this has been borne out by international research as well as examples here in our own city. Covid-19 has highlighted the importance of having a public space where people can feel safe and comfortable while hospitality businesses especially have been forced to place far greater emphasis on outdoor space. However, Capel Street also serves as an important arterial route and is used by local residential population. Vehicle access for deliveries and residents also needs to be managed and maintained.
We are pleased to see that many of the suggestions included in the Dublin Town submission have been incorporated into this plan. Pedestrians will enjoy wider footpaths, hospitality businesses can make greater use of their outdoor seating while traditional retailers will still have necessary access. We believe that this is a good compromise for all. DublinTown also looks forward to working with its members, Dublin City Council and other stakeholders as the incremental pedestrian trials are tested. We believe that the testing of various options for the street can reassure member businesses and the general public and create a broader consensus on the desired future for the street as the city adapts and remains relevant for all.
